FLORA

The exceptional wealth of the Durmitor’s vascular flora represents a natural phenomenon of particular scientific, phytogeographical and ecological interest. In Durmitor’s territory including the Tara and Piva canyons there are 1,325 species indentified and classified in 484 genera and 129 families. Durmitor is one of the most important refuge centres of the arctic-tertiary high mountanious flora. The old forms - endemic and endemic-relic species and genera represent this best. Of the total endemic flora of the Durmitor’s massif, 77% belong to the high mountainous endemic species (above 1,500m): 122 endemic species are collected in 70 genera and 30 families.

FAUNA
In ecological-bio-geographical terms Durmitor, as a whole, belongs to the mountain area of the north Dinarids. This is reflected in the composition of its animal world. Besides the geographical factors the diversity of fauna is also influenced by orographic, climatic, historical and anthropological factors which have stipulated the present composition of fauna as well as the existence of endemic-relict tertiary and glacial species. In this regard, the living world of Durmitor belongs partly to mountainous and partly to high mountainous ecosystems, but with evident presence of forms which belong more to the plain than to the mountainous ecosystems.
